Institute of Anaesthesiology & Critical Care

The Government General Hospital, Chennai started in 1664 regularised as a medical school in February 1835, became Madras Medical College in 1850 and was affiliated to the University of Madras in 1857. It is now a premier Institute and a tertiarry referral Hospital in Tamil Nadu, India.

The Department of Anaesthesiology, Madras Medical College was established in 1927 with Dr. Francis DARCS (Lond)., as Head of Department till 1939.

Dr. V. Rajagopalan D.A., ( Lond) was the first qualified Indian Professor and Civil Surgeon lecturer who held this post till 1974. Prof.Dr.Vellingiri.MD.,D.A Director ( In-Charge ) is the Head of Department of Anaesthesia Madras Medical College & Government General Hospital at present. The postgraduate Diploma Course in Anaesthesiology D.A. was started in 1956 and postgraduate Degree Course in Anaesthesiology M.D. was started in 1965.
